How do you locate materials to repaint faded resin blue/green statues?

MR
by MR
I have resin garden angels that have naturally faded and chipped over time. I have had no luck locating the materials to possibly refinish them back to the original colors they come in. I really like the "verde" finish that were originally and have not been able to locate anything on the web to show how to refinish them back to their original condition. They are too expensive to just throw away and replace. Color is the only condition issue they have. Please advise.

Rustolium makes a kit for doing that. Coat it with an outdoor polyurethane to keep it looking good. For my much smaller gnomes I've been using regular indoor paint but sealing it with 3 or more coats of poly.

Thanks for your comments. I have already looked at these places for the two tone color combinations and am not able to locate the same color combinations. I really want to keep the green/gray tone of the original look. I have not seen the Rustolium product in this color combo.

@MR By the shades of spray paint that match the statues. Spray the first color all over to cover completely. The second color spray at an angle to emphasize the detail and leave some of the first color showing.

Good luck! I have the same problem for touching up an outdoor fountain. They tell me that color has been discontinued.

@Diane Katzmark Google the item you want. Often it's available as an overstock item. Google is your friend (and mine)!

Have to use several coats of Copper paint with the "Blue Green" as the Weathered patina... rubbed on... Copper when exposed to Elements will turn that lovely "Blueish Green" you love... Google: How to age Copper for Patina of the Blue Green. I found several ideas there...Including one from This Old House: www.thisoldhouse.com › ... › Easy Upgrades

I have done a few outdoors projects, and I prefer a solid base of primer and then chalk paint, for the simple reason that it is so easy to "do" and "undo" what you don't like. You'll have to finish with a few coats of UV protection; this will certainly add a transparent yellow, which will push your lighter blues into a worn green hue. Snow, salt, deep-freeze and humidity are no problem. Experiment on an ornate frame: 1. paint base colour, 2. wipe shadow colour into crevices and off of relief, 3. "tickle" hghilight colour with blunt drybrush or similar 4. smear, sand or wipe back to underlayer to give it an organic feel. Once you have 3+ colours on, your eye will perceive many shades.

You need to sand them down to remove the old chipped paint. Then paint them with a good quality exterior latex paint in black. When dry do a wash (watered down paint) in a blue green color such as turquoise or a light green. When dry do the same wash with a watered down white paint. You want these washes to be transparent so you can see each layer of color. If you want them to look like bronze statues you can highlight with a metallic bronze paint in certain areas. If you have used good quality latex exterior paints you do not need to seal it otherwise I would seal with a good exterior clear finish in your choice of finish. I do not recommend using regular spray paint as it is oil based, and you will have the same issues going forward. Hope this helps...I have used this methods many times over the years with great results.

I refinish mine by spraying a, ammonia based cleaner all over it in the bath tub, let it soak for 1/2 hour, then scrub it good with a cleaning brush, rinse well, then let it dry for a couple days, inside, or in the sun. place item on a coffee can or something you can paint & turn, without touching it. On your color, I would use a light grey primer, let dry to touch, then spray in little amounts, the color that you want it to be. if you see you sprayed to much color, touch it up with the primer until you get the look you desire. I found a trick by accident on sealing my expensive statues .It is a product to seal paint on concrete floors, Clear epoxy coating. It comes in a two part epoxy type mix. read directions, and only mix up enough that you think you will need (it is expensive), use a throw away brush, paint it on as thin as possible, let dry for 1-2 days. I have used this on everything outdoors, even metal to seal my color. so far, my redo's have lasted three years. good luck

I painted mine with regular old acrylic craft paint, then sprayed them with 2 coats of clear gloss top coat. I painted it with metallic copper and then antiqued with turquoise. It now looks just like weathered copper! It has been outside for 2 years with no sign of weathering. You can buy the paint anywhere, from Walmart to Joann fabric, and it is very easy to custom mix your own color if you can't find the one you want!

Many people use latex house paint! Of course you want to clean them up and get rid of the loose paint.

Clean them well , you can use over cleaner. Try to get all loose paint or finish off. Spray them with a dark gray latex ( I would use chalk paint) then put on a faux patina like copper. You can get a very inexpensive craft paint. Then seal with a out door matte sealant. It should last..

My favorite is modern masters. I got mine from Amazon. It looks real because the base coat has metal in it and the patina you put on top changes into that beautiful weather worn look. Good luck
