Hi Michelle. There are several ways to stop stencils from bleeding:
Make sure that you are using a thin stencil and not a thick one so that it lays flat. Make sure to use very little paint on your brush - dab it on a paper towel/plate before dabbing it over the stencil. Your brush should almost be dry.
Make sure to dab your brush and not sweep it. When you sweep it you will inevitably get some of the paint under the edge of the stencil. Hope these help! Here are some projects as well from the blog with more stencilling tips in them...

I've had good luck with repositionable spary adhesive. Here's a project where we used it: https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2017/11/metallic-gold-soft-green-wall-diy-paint.html

Use a brush specifically designed for stencil painting and make sure to dab off excess paint from your brush before applying to the stencil.
You can use Mod Podge in the stenciled area first and then when it dries, use the paint. You need to use a very light amount of paint on your brush.
