Hi Marsha, there are several ways. You can trace your design or words onto a mylar sheet and cut out your stencil with a sharp blade by hand. Some people use crafting machines like Cricuts. You could find a stencil at a craft store, amazon, or etsy and then stencil a piece of wood with the saying/design that you want
My girlfriends makes her own from the flexible cutting mats found in the dollar store or any kitchen gadget shop.
