Hi Yolanda! You can easily purchase Waverly Chalk Style paint (at Wal-Mart) to do a white wash on your shelf. You'll want to dip your brush into the paint first and then lightly into a small amount of water. Wipe away the excess with a shop towel. :)
Here is a post on white washing for you! :)

What is the shelf finish now? It may need to be sealed if it’s raw MDF, cleaned & primed if it’s melamine faced.
If you’re not going to water plants on it nor put it outside, then any latex paint can be diluted for a white wash. It’s about the techniques, more than the paint.
I’d dilute it with water about 8:1.
You can dry brush it with a cheap chip brush for a wood grain look or you can rag roll it for a marbles effect.
If you want a dramatic woodgrain, I’d texturize a second chip brush.
Thank you very much for helping me out 😀 that’s exactly what I want it to look like Megan
Thank you Cheryl 🌺
