I've used gilder's paste, and its usually done over a base color (bole) like red or cobalt blue which is much cheaper and easier than gold leafing. If you want to really gold leaf it, buy sheets of gold leaf, and they have the fake stuff thats much cheaper, and you use size, and then lay the leaf on top and use a soft brush to work in in the detailing. You can also buy scraps of gold leaf cheaper. I get supplies on Amazon these days.
