My living room is beige n off white on the wall paper...one wall is all off white book shelves. Woodwork n doors same as bookshelf wall. I’m trying to find a color to paint the bookshelves n woodwork...the room has 2 windows 3 doors...I really want a change but nothing dramatic. My furniture is antique Victorian

Is there a color in your antique Victorian furniture that you can pull out and use as a bookcase color? Many times that furniture was upholstered with some pretty patterned fabric so maybe you can pick a color from the fabric. I don't know that I would paint the trim the same color of the bookcase if you can choose a pretty accent color for the bookcase.

Hi Jean. Pick a color in the pattern of one of your pieces of furniture or in the rug and go from there. If you think the color you really like is too dark you can go lighter. If it's not dark enough, use a darker tone. Happy Decorating!

  • Look for something to give you inspiration and pull colors from there. Bijous and Gk suggested using your rug or fabric in the room. Both are great ideas. You can also use artwork as a jumping off point. I have some more ideas for inspiration and helpful color info on my blog, www.design2bhappy.com. Good luck with your project.

  • Agreed. Start with a color from a rug or piece of artwork. I've got some color scheme advice in this post: https://jessicawellinginteriors.com/living-room-landing/
