How can I make/install temporary rug runners on a modern staircase?
Although my grandson is only 5 months old, I worry about how he will fare when learning to go up and down his parents' modern staircase that doesn't include risers. The steps are not spiral (thank goodness) and there are 4 steps to the landing and then 12 more to the upper floor. I imagine after 4 or 5 years the parents would want to return their staircase to its original style.

Staircases without risers don't pose any problems with going up and down. The treads extend about an inch beyond where the riser would be. Main concern and building codes is the space between balusters in railings. There are carpet runners available for individual threads.

Home Depot sells the carpets to put on the steps just get the two sized tape they came in packs of 13
Modern steps that are open, I would add some netting along the underside to prevent fall throughs. Treads would need an individual piece of carpet with carpet tape, or add a non-slip piece of tread tape to each step. Then if the railing is an open cable, you may also want to add some netting again so they don't poke there head through and then fall out.
