Around here the fashion is log beds.... the folks across from me make log furniture. You can get a $5 permit from the Forestry Dept to take wood from national forests and BLM land. Personally I like the clean peeled log look, but these are nice too.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09wwzJva7kM to clean peel logs you use a draw knife and do when the wood is green, the sap aids in cleanly removing the bark, sometimes you get lucky and can just yank the bark off after using your draw knife to remove a strip down the whole length of the tree. Some like to remove one strip down the whole tree, and then stack the wood to dry.... this prevents lots of checking (cracks), the wood will just check where you removed the bark.
