Yes hutch is a very commonly painted.
A lot of the bloggers tend to use chalk paint.
Here’s an example for you to refer to typically the furniture paint choices are lighter colored or white as the bloggers preferred aesthetic. The other colors certainly can be used.
I believe she recently painted her mothers hutch.
Certainly you get an idea of what you can do with paint and thrift store or older dark wooden furniture items.

To go all in to get a GREAT result, that means, prepping by SANDING, PRIMING(like a B Moore primer) and using steel wool between coats of primer(to get that super smooth finish) all BEFORE you paint. ALSO...the paints are a huge factor. If you are putting the time in to prep the cabinets well and paint them well you will want a good paint that will last. Benjamin Moore ADVANCE!! $50 per gallon but it's so worth it!!! I love using cabinet paint because it is super heavy duty paint for furniture that you will be using. Consider using a home paint sprayer for the job to get that super sleek pro finish. That paint is an excellent cabinet paint and you don't need a topcoat. I seriously just wipe it down when it gets dirty.
If you want to just change the color for a few years before you get something new then there are definitely easier methods to paint the hutch. (ie: spray painting, chalk painting) I just wanted to give you a lasting solution in case you didn't want to deal with chipping, wear, upkeep with waxes and brush strokes. Looks like a fun project. Good luck!

I'd recommend starting with a good bonding primer and then 2 coats of latex paint. HERE is a link for my favorite primer.
If it is in good shape, scuff the current finish with fine steel wool then clean with denatured alcohol. Prime with Kilz or Bullseye. Then paint.
Sure can! A good primer and a few coats of a quality latex paint will hook you right up!
