Eva Pomothyova Eva Vesela on Nov 19, 2014Gail, that is a stylized flying pigeon. It is a symbol of love, tenderness in our country. We used it as a wind chimes above the baby bed 100 years ago, later as an ornament on the Christmas tree.Helpful Reply

Sharon S on Nov 21, 2014This is a very specific form of wood carving - it's a fan bird and is made using a complicated process of splitting layers of wood - usually white cedar - and separating and moving the layers to form feathers. I've also seen it used to make native American headdresses.Helpful Reply
