June @ Coffee Under the Umbrella on Feb 06, 2013I have heard great things about Soy Gel and stain. It's expensive, but I've heard its worth it. I like Citristrip for paint, but never had good luck with it on stain.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Feb 06, 2013I have had better luck with some light sanding to "lighten" stain. If your going darker simply removing the top finish layer will allow more stain to be applied.Helpful Reply

Z on Feb 06, 2013Welcome to Hometalk Kim. Glad to have you aboard. I'm curious if you're not talking about a furniture refinisher? It dissolves the original finish and often removes stains too. Below is an example of the difference after using a furniture refinisher.Helpful Reply

Gail Salminen on Feb 06, 2013@Kim Gearin - I take it from your title you are new to the site - welcome aboard, you will love it here - lots of friendly people and great advice and creativity with very caring admin who answer tech question quickly and efficiently. Warning - site is addicting LOL. I used to use a product called polystripper, but I couldn't find it last summer when I redid a dresser. I found a product at Home Depot called Heirloom Furniture Stripper. The piece had multiple coats so I got the one for heavy paint - it was very thick and hard to spread. When I ran out I just got the regular strength and it worked much quicker and more effectively. It was even better than the product I used to use. I hope you plan on posting your project pics - everyone loves to see them. :)Helpful Reply

Z on Feb 06, 2013@Cheryl, I'm pretty sure it was Klean Strip Refinisher that I used on the above table. I found it in with the thinners at HoDe. Formby's is another brand name and though it works the same, the one I mentioned above was less expensive and wasn't as toxic smelling. I was even able to use it without my gas mask, which says a lot since I'm extremely sensitive. There's no scraping involved. Just wipe on and off with 4-OOOO steel wool.Helpful Reply

The Robin's Nest on Feb 07, 2013Another worthy product (works well on many old finishes) is Restore a Finish, it's a Howard's product, not sold in HoDep or Lowes, but can be ordered online and also can be found in many antique shops/malls. It comes in many colors and although it's not a stain, or a cleaner/stripper. it works very well, it partially disolves the existing finish and redistributes it, so the uneven or worn areas have new color. It also is applied with 0000 steel wool, it can sit a few minutes or so and then it's wiped off with a clean rag.Helpful Reply

Z on Feb 07, 2013I almost mentioned RAF @Rhonda. I've used that too, only our HoDe carries it in a few stain choices. It's very similar to the product I mentioned only, as you mentioned, it has color.Helpful Reply
