This will be installed in a kitchen, I know this is a fairly new product and I understand there is an issue with water and cork flooring. Thank you.

Cork flooring is not ideal for high-traffic areas, or spots with a lot of moisture. I always recommend more traditional tile in kitchens, but that is just one mans' opinion.
  • Patsy I would suggest going for Tile and you will never regret this. Tile is durable and the best when it comes to Kitchens.
  • We have installed cork in a kitchen here in Atlanta. Its a wooden base over a crawl space. So far, so good. Its warmer underfoot and its softer than other tile/wood offerings. Frankly, I say... go for it !

Patsy, I have a slightly different opinion of cork. Installed and finished correctly, it is an incredibly durable product and fantastic choice for the kitchen. In fact, this summer, I had the chance to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's famous "Falling Water" house (see: http://www.fallingwater.org/) and found the ORIGINAL cork floor (and bathroom walls!) were still in great shape. That home was finished in 1939 so that is really saying something. I also have a friend who is one of the most experience home inspectors in the nation who used this as a floor in is his very busy kitchen ten years ago. Again -- still in fantastic shape. So you see, cork isn't really "new"at all!
  • Falling Water is one of my favorite FLW designs. Have never seen in in person but have seen a some FLW designs in WI and AZ. Did not know that he used cork floors at some locations. Interesting.

Modern cork floors are not that durable...at least compared to real hardwoods...as is the case with hardwoods these should also not be used in a kitchen...any place that can see water is a bad idea. Go with tile. http://www.hometalk.com/activity/32123

We installed cork in our living/dining area last year. We have two dogs and one child. We love the look, love the warmth over tile or hardwood but it is not holding up well at all. Wish now we had gone with another choice. We were told it would hold up as well as hardwoods because of the coating on it but this is not the case. I would not recommend for high traffic/use areas.
