Knockout roses definitely benefit from a good annual pruning, Barbara, which in your area should be done in late winter before the spring growth flush, so late February-early March. Take a good look at the plant, removing any dead or twiggy growth in the interior, and then aim for a nice rounded shape plant of about 2 feet. I think it's a good insurance policy to dip your pruning shears in water mixed with a little bleach before pruning. Because pruning encourages growth, this is a good time to give your plants a good slow-release fertilizer formulated for roses. And I don't think a couple of tablespoons of Epsom salts would hurt, either. Pull the mulch back before you do this and then put it back in place.

Barbara you can cut the knockout roses back now by one-third and cut back another one-third in February or March depending on how warm the late winter is this year.
