Is a hot water recirculating system worth the money?

  • Hi Nichole, In my opinion, they are not worth the cost. Not only do you pay to have them installed, but you can expect your energy bills to go up. Most of these waste electricity/propane and heat, though how much varies with the setup. Waiting 30 - 60 seconds for the hot water to flow to the tap is worth every penny in my opinion.

If you are building or completely renovating a large house, probably. However, it can be really expensive and complicated to retrofit a house with one of these systems. It's hard to believe that your financial savings would ever offset the expense. Water is really cheap in the US, and you can figure out ways to save the water while you wait for it to heat up if you are concerned about that (put buckets under the tap and use the water for houseplants, for example). Water heating is also a relatively small expense, and won't be offset much by this system.

I have one of these systems. If you have a long distance from your hotwater heater to your bathrooms, it is nice. If you are only worried about one sink or shower, consider using a 110 volt on demand water heater.
