It might be as simple as the chain coming unhooked in the tank. There are different types, but, this one is the simplest. Here is additional info:

Chain located in tank attached to flushing lever is caught under flap in tank. Lift tank top, find chain, see if you can shorten it or take up slack. Unless you turn water off below toilet, water will run while you make the fix.
If the problem is just the flush lever sticking, you can buy a replacement lever at the hardware store for a couple of bucks. They are very easy to replace.
