Top for a buffet

I have a 60” x 20“ buffet that I want to put a top on that will have an overhang on the back edge so people can sit at it. Has anyone ever used an old door for something like that?

Sure, you can use whatever will work for you, including a door — if it fits or can be made to fit. Another idea would be to get an acrylic see-through plastic sheet to the appropriate size. That could turn out to be even better if the top of your buffet has beautiful wood grain that you would not want to cover up . They can be found online or at home stores such as Home Depot. Good luck!

Hello again. If you don’t need the wood grain to show through you can always use plywood to extend the buffet tabletop. Many households do it that way. The plywood can be painted the color of your buffet and then painted with a polyurethane sealer. Click on the link below and check out these ideas from Pinterest. On the last episode of HGTV Home Town, Ben and Erin Napier their salvaged a series of base kitchen cabinets and custom made a wooden top for it making a beautiful kitchen island. So yes a solid wood door would be another option.

I actually saw that episode of Home Town and their reusing that set of cabinets. Just don’t remember what Ben did for a counter top

      Thank you

A door will work... just use corbels or brackets to support the overhanging edge.. and you can put a plexiglas or glass top on it if the door is not totally flat

Yes, great ideas, I have a picture and they used pretty corbels painted the same color as the hutch.

      Thank you

Use the doorknob hole to hold a vase, candle holder or other decorative or functional item for the table. The doorknob will give the tabletop character and something to talk about over drinks or dinner!

If I remember, correctly Ben his “baby brother” took the wood salvaged from the home and glued the wood together with pipe clamps overnight to make the countertop. I’m pretty sure he mentioned using a piece of new pine or oak down the middle for structure.

I was impressed with the home renovation show that repurposes material versus sledge hammer slamming and smashing.
