Dig down the area you want to make the sidewalk and lay a stone chip (fine gravel) bed. Tamp it down using a manual or preferably a power tamper. I would suggest using plastic paver edging, but you could use 2x4 pressure treated to define the border. Lay the bricks in whatever pattern you'd like and then finish with sweeping polymeric sand between the joints and water to seal it all.
