stack wooden crates (w/reinforcement). Use fabric to hide contents (like a small curtain) or baskets fit nicely as well.
Old kitchen cabinets (the small ones above the fridge) stacked. Build from old pallets. Build from new lumber with a solid backing on one side to create the space for storage , then compartmentalize as needed.

most hardware store sell the stair makers (side of stairs) then you nail on the base and steps. Primer and paint all in one. Done.
