Not really sure what the white marks are, but could be a discoloration from a boil over. The product they sell to clean the stove top is worth the money. It cleans well, (sometimes with a lot of scrubbing). It also leaves a protective film, which help it stay clean. Just don't use any other cleaners on it, or it takes the protective film away.
