Place grate in gallon size freezer bag. Pour in a couple of tablespoons of ammonia, Seal bag. Let sit for 10 - 12 hours. Wash with warm soapy water. Ammonia will turn brown with the nastiness. I have also used this for my vent cover and it worked great, might work on your grates too. http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-clean-a-greasy-range-hood-filter-cleaning-lessons-from-the-kitchn-203844

I put mine in the dishwasher.

I do the same as Becky Wood. It only took one cap full of ammonia, and the fumes loosened all the black gunk overnight! They just wiped clean the next day. I did them one at a time. My husband and I were both amazed.

I run mine through the dishwasher on a regular basis BUT being a pretty busy cooker/baker, the gunk does NOT come off. I'm going to try the ammonia & plastic bag process and hope this works. I have a clean stove top & over then you see the grimey grills. It's like getting all dressed up and not brushing your hair ! Lol.
