It's as simple as a lemon, a teaspoon of baking soda, and a bowl to mix your paste. Rub that over the brass using a soft cloth to get it shiny clean again.
Old fashioned "Brasso" sold in some grocery stores and most all hardware stores. You will need plenty of elbow grease. It's a job but the final results are well worth it. I've tried other "fast and easy" remedies only to be so disappointed.

Tomato based products. I use tomato sauce, but ketchup as mentioned works too. The acidity in them eats away the tarnish. You can also use Brasso, it's strong and works great.
