I use my vacuum with the brush attachment on the hose. I have popcorn ceilings so some of the popcorn will flake off--so do this gently. You can also try a duster with a long handle. You will get the dust off but the "dirt/grease" will remain. While painting ceiling is not my favorite thing to do I am always amazed at how dirty things were and how clean they look when I repaint. If your ceiling is flat--with no popcorn--you can scrub away with warm soapy water and either dish soap, Mr. Clean or TSP.
“Krud kutter cleaner/degreaser” is a good start to clean the ceiling. It may require painting after. If your ceiling isn't heavily textured, use "Awesome" from the dollar store. It cleans grease easily. My first experience with it was cleaning a turkey fryer explosion from the side of a garage-brick and vinyl. I had been scrubbing with steel wool, but Awesome only needed a sponge to wipe it off.
