Wall fish tank -- What to do with it?

We moved into a house that has a built in fish tank in the wall, no fish. I don't really want to focus on paying someone to maintain it or deal with fish. Any suggestions on what I should do with the fish tank. I'll have to drain the water first, but looking for some clever ideas. It's in our main family/media room.

It would be a lovely place for plants .. a terrarium perhaps? I assume you can reach it from another room or ??

Is that a reflection of a window or a window in another room? Either way, I'd close it in on one side and make it into a display box or for storage.

My first thought also was a terrarium .

Will a TV fit into it? It won't cost much to fill in one wall, unless it's plaster. Drywall is not very expensive and a handy man can do it for you. Or a good friend or neighbor. Put a flat screen in the other wall.

I have a fish tank that is HUGE but does not contain any fish - (we haven't refinished the floors so we don't want to have it moved multiple times. I currently keep keepsakes in it as if it were a large display. You can put additional glass shelves in it and the fish lighting lights the displays. I also put my Christmas village inside it (in my case also the top) and it makes a beautiful display during the holidays

You could put collages of family pictures inside facing out. Use different pictures facing each wall. Place them on something firm before putting up. I wouldn't adhere them directly to the glass. It would look like a frame of family pictures, if you use a a picture mat.

Cover it with a large photo or painting & use it as a hiding place. If it's not flush to the wall use molding to bridge the gap.

I think that you shouldn't pay anyone to maintain it, but your kids might like some fish.

Is it in a good place for viewing the flat screen TV? I have seen one of these converted into a terrarium if you aren't wanting to remove the tank. But I'm with kaioverbeck, I'd use it for fish - I'd just have to resist the temptation to go saltwater!

Get an image or semi-transparent painting done on the glass. like a permanent wall picture!

It should be basically just a self-contained fish tank that has been fitted to the wall opening and then trimmed out. I would carefully remove the trim, then slide the tank out. (remove the water first : ) In its place you could put some glass or wood shelving if you want it to remain open and display some of your favorite pieces. Or once its removed, add a piece of wall board on either or both wall sides, tape off and plaster to close up the hole.
