These are on top of a raised plastic bag, is there anything else I can use instead , or is it safe to have lights on plastic bag.

Use a string of LED lights - no, or very little, heat.

Those new LED lights do not generate heat so they will work. In fact, cities that get lots of snow and ice have had trouble with LED traffic lights not melting the ice and snow off the lights!

The LED lights are stunning in the vibrant colors, but they actually do not put out that ambiance that goes with a Christmas Tree! I used mine only 1 year...for me, they just did not radiate any "magic" in the room!

Instead of plastic , aluminum foil would be safe (I think)
