How do I decorate a fireplace with no mantel?

Here is a post I wrote where we created a fireplace in a condo that didn't have one. In the fireplace chase design, it doesn't have a mantel. Even though they hung a television above it, you can still envision if it were a large piece of artwork.
It's not hard to install a shelf-type mantel if you want one.
