How do I make a hole in ceramic/pottery/glass plates?

I would like to use plates/bowls/cups to build my own bird feeders, but need to drill a hole in the center of the dish. How do you get the hole without breaking the dish?

Make a dam of putty on the area you want to cut and fill it with water. Use a diamond drill on glass or porcelain and a regular on clay. You need to keep the drill bit from getting too hot and cracking the glass, thus the water. The bits are cheap.
