Yes you can use squared off corners. If you really like the look of mitering corners, you can get a very inexpensive miter box that guides the saw or a chop saw will cut it exactly for you. Most cuts are not perfect, so caulking is used to cover mistakes. Then painted.

Do you know you can take the glass down and take it to your local glass shop. They can cut it down or you can have a frame made for it. Paint it and then put your mirror back on the wall with the frame. Now it’s updated! You can call a glazier and see what they charge to cut it. You could cut it yourself. There are instructions on Utube. You have options😊🎃
