I would try softening them in warm water first.

Soak the pine one over night . Tlake gardening shears work your way between the pine cone evenlyon both sides evenly and cit.
Do you have access to a Dremel? They are great for doing tiny little projects.
Pruning shears work best!
(just leave one side of handle on the ground while closing them between a cone.)
I used a belt sander and just sanded it down to have a flat side - works grreat!
