Judy... you could cover it with a 1.5" deep canvas. Look around Marshalls for some on clearance. (You could buy a couple and make it a "gallery wall" and no one would know that one is hiding that box!)

You could Box it in with a cupboard and maybe a few shelves, making it more of a feature (hidden in plain sight)! Balance it up by reproducing the same shape the other side (as a hidey hole) and cover them with Pictures. Place a large clock over it!
Paint it out in the room colour or wallpaper the wall and the box too. Place a tall piece of furniture in front of it and cut out the back to allow access to the box. Hope those ideas may be of some use to you.
