How do you safely cut the top off a wine bottle to use for a project?

I want to make a lamp using an old wine bottle but don't know how to cut the top off the glass bottle. Any suggestions? P.S. This is a new project idea for me.

You can buy a glass cutter in the big box stores. Kind of looks like a can opener. Inexpensive too. -

If its a real wine bottle, not a screw top, they are made to break at bottom of the top rim by striking it from the side with a sword, heavy knife while your out picnicing, climbing -

Ophs, anyway,,,, here is a video of the principal ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFW-Qtme2tc with a wine bottle you turning it as you are quickly striking it with the knife on the lower part of that rim. Breaks off so smooth you can drink from it..... taught to me by numerous European mountaineers I knew.![]()
