How to attach cable spool top to cast iron sewing machine base

Sonya
by Sonya
Needing some ideas to attach securely the end of a timber cable spool that I've pulled apart. Wanting to create a table . The cable spool top is extremely heavy too. The cast iron base has slats of timber already attached that I can remove. See photos

Because the spool top is so thick not sure what type of bolts/screws could hold it firm enough

I can't tell how the slats are attached to the base, and I think you need at least 2by4's, but if you can make then secure enough to hold the spool, I would drill holes in the 2by4's to match the ones in the spool and use long bolts and nuts to hold them together.
