I usually used 2 pieces of large bamboo that looks good either natural or painted. Cut the bamboo slightly larger than your fabric width and insert 2 eye hooks using a fine drill bit to pre-drll the holes.
Then insert the hooks into the ceiling the width of the two eye hooks, use plastic anchors to ensure they don't pull out if its drywall, predrill a hole and hammer in the anchor - buy the size just smaller than the thread diameter of your hook.
If you want your poles to hang lower, then buy some chain at the hardware store for enough for 4 hooks. Best to have them cut the chain to your desired lengths. Buy 4 of those rings that open to fasten through your eyehooks.
The fabric can be anything you like from a gauzy cotton to a printed fabric, even 2 tones. If you want a substantial canopy, sew two pieces of fabric together with right sides facing each other, leaving one end open. Trim the excess corner fabric diagonally, then turn it inside out, and iron the seams around to get it nice and flat panel. Then iron the open end seam allowances in and pin to sew by hand, or machine stitch a border around the whole piece. You can add a couple large tassels to the corners also.
