My recent Jewelry tiers

Question

An 11 yr old young lady and I did some 'crafting' and made these jewelry tiers. I liked my original one so well, and it was so easy , we decided to make a couple as gifts. You can also see my stash of glass pieces. But I am finding them to be scarce.  I really need larger bottom glass plates that are pretty.What are people doing with all their stuff nowadays? V Village, Gwill, Ross;  hardly any pretty dishes to be find. And the yard sales..dont bother. But we had a nice visit .

Thanks ladies ...this really is a fun and FAST gratifying craft to do with kids, esp grandkids.  @Sheila, your post may have been where I got the idea.

btw, Annamarie didnt use enough glue on one of her tiers, we went to pick it up and off came a tier!  OOPS!  but it didnt break!  It hadnt set and she didnt use enough E6000. I agree, I think my clear Dap silicone sealant is easier to use. It doesnt run as easily, and dries and sets faster,( I think.)

What I really like about this is; I was teaching her to do something for someone else..and hopefully showing her it doesnt take much time to do something for someone else. But the pleasure they both will get, 'priceless'! ha

Bernice, here in PA we have Dollar Stores. The one near me 'Dollar Tree' carries glass dinner plates in different styles. Just a thought if you have them near you.

Yikes, I just came from GW and SalArmy and some thrift stores. I paid 4 dollars for a plate I know I bought for 1 dollar years ago. making me think maybe the stuff I have is worth something, since dishes are going for such high prices. Maybe I am ruining an heirloom, or something valuable????   Very discouraging.  Our dollar tree is so blah..just plain plain glass.       Oh well , I am just exhausted right now , things will look better when i am revived!

Sheila, read your post on your  link again, and commented on durability there, and just cut and pasted the same info here.   Just in case anyone wants to use the Dap or GE clear silicone instead of E6000. Which i intend to do, E6000 ran a bit. I am able to tell when the silicone is ready and is set enough. But the E was not as easy. So I have some drips on my glass.

Do you know what will take the E6000 droplets off?

Re; Dap clear silicone, I used it on my bowling balls with 'gems' ie half marbles. They had been outside for a few years, heat and cold. It holds up great! I also used the GE clear silicone (for baths , exterior and interior). Again pretty tough stuff. After a few YEARS in the weather of all kinds, some of the gems started falling off but the biggest problem was from water scale and spots. Gems didnt look so cute, and i got tired of using vinegar, Mr. Clean eraser etc trying to keep them shiny!

What kind of glue do you use in order for you dishes to stay put for a long period of time?

Hi Caroline..on these I used E6000, but I dont like it. It is runny and drippy and doesn't set up as fast as ...silicone caulk..clear. Dap, Ge  ll..etc.  I use a silicone that will stand up out in the weather.(I used it on my bowling balls) It sets up pretty fast, but you need to reemember to give it several hours to be very strong. If you lift the middle plate or top before it is really set...watch out! I found out the hard way.I never pick my stuff up from the top or middle now, anyway.Did you check my other thread on tiers also?Some good helpful comments from  HT  peeps too.  If you do something , do post ..I would love to see what you do.

They are brand names...so sorry! I didnt know that a long time ago either.They are Silicone caulking. have never used gorilla glue..it might work. Dont know.

So I am looking at my tiers again, then I notice the chairs....and I remember how much I hate Early American(I think) furniture. I mean ,big    grrrr!

Got these about 16 years ago, thinking just short term until I can get what I want..and of course it never happened!   Did I mention my intense dislike of EA?  yuuuup!

@Sheila....hmmm am disappointed with the latest tiers. I am finding the edges on a lot of clear glass are thin, and the silicone is supposedly clear, but when it dries you can see the over application (squeezed out glue) from making sure the   thin edges get enough to hold.  Maybe the E6000 is better, i dont see the over lapping glue on those other tiers. It is transparent. hmmm

Bernice - about the EA chairs. So why don't you get yourself some Annie Sloan or CC_______ paint??   (can't remember the rest of the name) Go ask Donna aka Shabby Daze, she is a dealer. I think Sheila uses the Annie Sloan so between the two of them they can help you.  I'd paint these babies, distress them a little and you'd be in love with them all over again.  Paint the legs of the table while you're at it!!

Got nuthin to add on the adhesive issue -  that's your baby. Meanwhile, I'm busy naming baby racoons!!!  See Sherrie in Fl. on that one!!

Oh Susan, i have thought  so many times to paint them..but they are still Early American, and I hate the shape/design,  plus theyare so uncomfortable. However they are Ethan Allen I believe, or that other kind, not cheap stuff. But that doesnt really bother me. I just do not like early a.m.

The table is super..sits 10 or more! I would paint the legs in a heartbeat! I really like rattan! Am lurking at Pier One site frequently.But 400 for chairs ...yikes! When I can almost buy a new set for a little more than that.I also am toying with wanting a round table! but if you could see my table now, all l that glass and marbles and STUFF! where then would I work the few times I do anything.
Hoping to hear from Sheila on the glue issue ..or anyone. Maybe I have to go back to E6000 for clear glass?

Ok, next bunch I will use the Dap sealant. This dries cloudy looking,on clear stuff,  while the e6000 was completely clear. Did you see my chairs in picture 4? The story is..I SETTLED years and years ago , for a temporary fix until I got 'what I wanted'...haha.Yeah.

Bernice - I'd paint those chairs in a heartbeat - even if they're not exactly what you've always wanted.  Then get a pretty vine - small flower type stencil to do across the inside top of the chairs.  Actually do a two-tone finish on the chairs and then buy some pretty chair pads.  I have wood chairs too and I can't stand them w/o chair pads.  I'm OCD about changing chair pads, placemats, runners - the whole shebang, with the seasons or whatever holiday is happening!!!

NOW, if you're still hellbent on getting something different - a piece of advice: The chairs get the absolute most wear & tear and should be very well built and strong.  The chairs get the most abuse - people sometimes lean back on the two back legs (a HUGE NO NO) but it happens nonetheless. Also the stretchers - little kids stand on them trying to reach you when you're sitting down and adults tend to sometimes hook their shoe heels on the front stretchers!!!  See where I'm going w/this?  It can be alot of money to replace them but honestly, cheap chairs will not hold up and then you'll be replacing them - again!!!  Just my 2 cents worth Darlin!!  ; ~)

Oh, Susan, you must be thinking I am going to let someone sit on them? oh no! Like I would cook and actually sit at the table??Oh dear , I must have given the wrong impression! (She says with tongue in cheek,) jusstttt kidding! :)    Well, maybe not. Ha!  Yes, no kids here, we just plop our Southern ends in our chairs and eat in front of the tv! I know, heathens!Occasionally we have the inlaws for dinner, and a few friends once in a while. But I understand what you are saying. I hadn't thought of that. I personally put my feet on the 'stretchers', (didnt know theyare called that. I learn so much here).     !But here I go... whining!!   I hate that HOLE in the top, and the little things that stick up on the side. (got names for those?) 
and those knobby legs! So many knobs!  But I get your point!

And yep, just looked , Ethan Allen...probably as old as I am!  I have been saying they are hard rock maple like I know what I am talking about, I think I made that up! Just looked under the chair, says Nutmeg Plum..would that be the color? or wood?

Ok, but b 4 you go . . . . .1st of all - Ethan Allen 'in the day' was one of the better furniture manufafcturers around.  Don't know much about what they do these days as so many companies have relocated overseas.  I'm not sure if there's maple and Hard Rock Maple - if they're two different types of maple or not.  Maple is a hardwood though, and therefor, very durable! Nutmeg Plum is the name of the finish and the little knobs on the tops of the chairs are sometimes referred to as 'ears'!!  No kidding - funny huh???

I know, (sniff!)  Me too.   I had even considered chair covers..but trying to buy them , I would have had to 'remake' them..and I am not game for that  However, now that you girls are imploring me to be sensible, maybe I can get some made out of..canvas? Something  not pricey? And pay a lot less for covers than I would  for one chair?

Well . . . . IF  you're just talkin about the little round knob part then probably yes. That's more just a decorative thing than anything to do with the structural integrity.

Yep Bernice, that's what friends are for!!  So now you have windsor style chairs and a pedestal table your hubby is reluctant to let you paint.  Here's what you do - find him gone somewhere for a few hours and get busy on that pedestal.  Once he sees it he'll like it!!  ;~)  You can blame us if you want and tell him we said it was OK to do that!!

can I just put in my 2cents?  I love E6000 and have never tried DAP or GE for gluing...I've done glasswork (mosaics on glass) and wouldn't use anything other than E6000.  I wanted a clear as glass glue and after searching for like what took forever, found this stuff and never used anything else...ever.
