or buy potted grocery store hyacinths, or florist lilies by the stem - they will open and bloom beautifully for you for at least a week and they make everyone smile. Lynda

Hi Janet, I too work in an office with no windows, in fact I am underground in the PATH in Toronto, and cut flowers last a week, sometimes two, which is why I replied. My latest a potted hyacinth so tight that I couldn't tell the colour, opened beautifully and gave me 2 weeks of happiness for $4.99. A single Iris in a small vase makes people stop and stare, we have guessing games on the names of the flowers. I just wanted the Think tank to explore options. :)

Actually some craft shops like Michael's carry artificial terrarium plants that look real but require zero work other than dusting them. Or if you care to have live blooms, alstroemerias are a long lasting cut flower beautiful for an office vase. They'll last at least two weeks and don't need light.

Succulents are both pretty and - very - low maintenance. They are usually soft, interesting to look at and provide color. They require very little room.

Snake plant, aka Mother in Laws Tongue, New, Pothos, any of them, Rubber Tree, the list is too long. They filter the air, which is needed.
  • I have had indoor plants for 40 years and all plants need some sort of light- so with that- is there a way you can add a light just for the plants where they are going to be? There are LED grow lights that you could have on during work hours and turn off when you leave. Or if the lighting in the office stays on 24/7 the plants may not thrive either because just like humans, plants need rest. I agree that snake plant could do well under the office lighting and even trailing philodendrons. You could even try a Peace lily but you will never get blooms. Plants are living things and they do need some sort of sun/artificial light to be alive

Here is a list of some:

    • Bromeliads—These indoor plants can grow with only artificial lighting.
    • Snake plants—Excellent houseplants for rooms with little natural light.
    • Calathea plants—Occasional sunlight can help keep foliage colorful and exciting.
    • Peace lilies—Direct sunlight isn’t good for their leaf color, but they still produce flowers in low-light.
    • Cast-iron plant—This hardy green leafy plant grows in any kind of light or shady environment.
    • Golden pothos for hanging baskets—An excellent choice for a trailing vine plant where light is at a minimum.
    • Dragon tree—Colorful foliage where there isn’t much sun – it is the choice feature of this low-light, low-maintenance plant.
    • Monsteras—Species of Monsteras can tolerate low light and are trendy houseplants in modern homes.
    • Parlor palm—This aesthetic plant brings the tropics to any room or office where you only have artificial light or minimal natural light.
