This appears to be glazed pottery, no? How are you "adding birthdays" to it?
Regardless of your answers, pottery pretty much breaks or it does not when you introduce a stress. There is really no way to tell how it will react. If this is a family heirloom and you are mechanically marking it or re-firing, you have to decide whether it is worth taking the chance, especially since cracks are starting to show. Anyone here who answers otherwise is just guessing.
i thought for a second you were describing me. Lol
If its crazing, which is a glaze defect- Im not certain you can prevent further damage with use. Can you find a perfectly clear plate to put over this one as an invisible protective sleeve? That way the glazing cracks will not collect or be exposed to food or water.
