What type of paint works on screen made door decor?

I've been trying to find out what type of paint or mixture of paints will paint on aluminum screen. I want to make seasonal "door hangers" you see in boutiques. The screen material is shaped into bunnies, pumpkins, shamrocks, etc. painted and hung on your front door. I have managed to make a flower and I used craft acrylic paint, but it does not fill in the screen holes like the ones I see in stores. I also tried adding glue and mod podge to the paint, but it still doesn't fill in. Does anyone know the secret?

I would try spray paint going back and forth so the paint gets the whole screen You will probably have to repeat for coverage.

Rustoleum would be my first choice as it has paint made for metal, in quart and spray.

I have seen this done on Hometalk previously. Try www.bella-tucker.com she has done this type of work.

Without photos it's just a guess. 1) If possible you could lay them down flat and use a mini roller and a latex acrylic paint. 2) Dip them into the acrylic paint. 3) Like others have suggested spray paint them. Hope that helps, -Paul ps. Post a pic if you can. :-)

My personal favorite and the spray paint I use the most is Krylon Interior/Exterior Spray Paint. It's made to cover everything including metal so I think you will be happy with the finish. Make sure to do several light coats on both sides of the screen. Good luck and have fun!

I appreciate all the suggestions and I tried several. What has worked best is to cover front and back of the pieces of screen with gesso before painting. A couple of coats of acrylic craft paint over the gesso covers pretty good. Still working on my project, but hope to post pic when complete.
