when ever i hear antique and paint i kinda cringe. there is old, then there is antique. i would have the piece you are transforming photographed and get a few evaluations of worth. if its just old.. go for it.
Were you looking to distress it? You could paint it a bright metallic color, let dry, then cover certain areas with vaseline, paint over dark color, then wipe off the vaseline. The paint won't stick to the vaseline. It looks cool like that.
Chalk paint it. It has a natural antique finish
I suggest you have the item appraised prior to changing it. You might be surprised what it is worth. Most of the time when antiques are painted the value is zero.
you can use two colors. Pick your base. After it dries use a glaze paint. You brush it on and wipe with cheesecloth until you like the way it looks. color showing through. Wipe a little or a lot.
