How well does painted upholstery hold up?

I'm considering painting a bold, floral print sofa with an off-white color but I'm concerned about getting good coverage and how well it will hold up over time. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

How does chalk paint hold up?
Fabrics, depending on the fibre content and finish (both the right side and backside), lend themselves better or not-as-well to being painted, and have more or less durability over time.
