I have old 1980s merillat cabinets. The ones with a white face and wood trim on top.I was hoping to spruce them up instead of spending money on new doors. Can I paint them? Has anyone spruced theirs up?

You certainly can paint the cabinets. Start by removing the hardware and doors. Clean with soap and water and let dry. Use a good primer dry in between and paint.

Thanks you Janet - is there a particular type of paint I should use?

@Krys Rustoleum is a brand name. As a brand, they make paint and finishes for nearly every application.

You can paint anything nowdays with the right products. Follow Janet's instructions above for prep, they're good ones. Use a bonding primer so you get really good adhesion for the paint, Sherwin Williams carries a good one. In fact, I pretty much swear by Sherwin Williams paint in general. It's more expensive than Valspar or Behr, but for a really high traffic, high wear area like a kitchen I'd go with the Sherwin Williams. Take one of your doors with you to the store and let one of their people look at the finish, at least around my area the staff at the stores are very highly trained, in fact a lot of them are retired professional painters. They'll give you some great info on which products you need, then your only big question to answer is what color you want.

@Danielle Thank you I never heard of a bonding primer. I was worried about the laminate finish not holding the paint. Thank You for your help

Actually, you can just paint the wood part, then change out the hardware. We did that and it looked great.
