Yup, it's usually true! If you have a very rough and damage surface, you may want to sand, but in general - chalk paint doesn't require much prep
I have used chalk paint sucessfilly without priming( both solid wood and laminate). I wipe the surface with deglosser first, let dry and paint. The first coat looks awful.....streaky, second coat wonderful. If there are gouges on the wood, it will show so you have to fill & smooth before painting. If you want a distressed look, just paint. I'm on my 10th item of furniture ( some distressed, some not)
Yes you can. I start by first cleaning the piece thoroughly to remove any debris and let dry. Then I usually ruff up the surface with a light sanding just to remove any high spots but I have had success in skipping this step also. Then apply your chalk paint. It usually takes a second coat. Lightly sand afterwards to get a nice soft finish. Remove any sanding particles with a tack cloth. Apply a coat of wax and you are finished.
Chalk paint is wonderful. We have used it on oak cabinets, oak bannister & stringers, laminate counters, vinyl flooring, metal lamps, gold plated hall trees.......all with great success. Some pieces were waxed, some polyed.
Annie Sloan chalk paint is great, but recently discovered Rust-Oleum Chalked paint. Very good also & lots less expensive than the AS product.
if you have a high gloss finish to start with...you may need to sand enough to remove the gloss....especially if you have a varnish or epoxy finish in place....paint will stick, but will peel if you don't rough up the original finish....think of putting paint on glass....it will peel off when dry....unless of course you use glass paint to start with
