Hey there, I would think the sky is the limit in choosing a "wash" color. I've seen even black paint mixed 50/50 with water to deepen the color of wood.
You can and should do what you like! Painting is very forgiving since you can always repaint something that doesn’t come out how you expected. I say go for it, be creative, and make your space awesome!
😊
You bet and it looks even better! If you use 3 different shades of your preferred color, it will be amazing!
If you use a caramel, you can also use a darker or lighter shade of your caramel, or do the same with the white. Did you know there are hundreds of variations of "white"? Good luck!

I have "whitewashed" with several colors, including black. The great thing about crafts and decorating is you do what YOU want, what you like. And if, in the end, you don't like it, just do something else :)
Sure you can, but you might want to add some white to your base color coat. Get some cardboard and practice on it to find the shade or finish you like! Work in small batches.
