Can you use gel stain with light sanding on old hardwood floors?

I have been seeing stained wood furnishings updated with gel stain. It looks like there is light sanding used, so I was wondering if this same technique could be used on floors.

I have been wanting to redo my floors, but have avoided it because of the mess. I will have to investigate to see if it is easier to do with gel stain.
