We used gel stain on our kitchen cabinets and it worked well, only had to lightly sand instead of strip; put on as many coats as the Color you want ; Then we coated with spar urethane.
I used gel stain on two sets of railings. I put on 3 coats to achieve the color that I wanted. I made sure that each coat was completely dry before applying the next coat. I applied 2 coats of varathane to seal the color. I am very happy with the results.
