Hi Jane, Mix up 1 part water to 2 parts flat white latex paint (like budget ceiling paint from our local hardware store). Brush (don't roll) the paint on in the direction of the wood grain. Wipe off with a paper towel or rag in the direction of the wood grain. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for desired look
White washed pine is going to look yellow. I would stain or paint it brown or gray first, then white wash it and sand it a bit so that other color shows through. Or you can seal it with shellac first to keep it from turning yellow. Give the knots 2-3 coats of shellac of they will show through and look ugly.
