Are you sure you want to paint slate? All you have to do is wipe down or squeegee the slate so it doesn't develop water spots as it dries. Paint in the shower is going to peel sooner rather than later and be much more of an eyesore. I m worried you might regret it down the line.

Even paint in pools tends to peel eventually and you don't want that problem.
Having hard water is just one of those things you have to learn to tolerate or either put in a water softening system. Different parts of the country tend to have different problems with water stains...some have rust!!!!
