How do I stencil on a milk can?

I have an old milk can that I painted black and want to stencil a welcome sign but because stencils are a ridged plastic can't get it flat enough without paint bleeding.

When I've had that problem, I traced inside the stencil with a pencil then painted in my letters. It looks just like the stencil, takes a little longer but comes out great. Another thing you might want to try is spray adhesive on the back of the stencil then put it down on the milk can.
Try and tape stencil and use dabbing motions to stencil. Not brush strokes. This will prevent paint bleed through. :)

Hi Karen, you may have to buy another stencil that's made of flexible plastic, usually a dollar store has them.
Try the dry brush stenciling technique described in this post. You will likely need to come back and do some touch up work with a small artist's brush regardless.
