Paint/gel stain over chalk paint waxed cabinets

3 years ago I painted over my wood cabinets with Annie Sloan Chalk paint cream and then used the dark wax all over it.. however I am ready to go back to a solid color know... either priming white then using gel stain or latex paint. My question is do I have to sand off the wax or just clean the best I can?? Just want it to stick with or without primer I dont do alot of over lapping .. Look forward to a reply! THank you. You will have to remove the wax for the new paint to adhere correctly
I would sand off the wax before applying anything else. Otherwise, the wax should repel the next finish.
I believe you will be sorry if you do not do a proper job. Remove the doors and use a stripper to take the doors down to wood. Sand and tack cloth. Then paint. Good luck.
Prep is everything. Takes some time, because if you don't, your results will not look good or last.

You use mineral spirits on a soft rag to remove wax, not sure on the Annie Sloan wax so test first.
