What is the best way to give wood that rustic, weathered look?

For example is there a certain technique to use when painting the piece of wood, or is there a special product which can make it easier to achieve the weathered look? Thanks in advance

Use chalk paint and do a dry brush technique (very little paint), let dry and lightly sand. You can buy chalk paint in the craft section at Walmart - Waverly brand.

Make a 'tea' using a steel wool pad and vinegar (put steel wool in a jar and cover with vinegar, let stand overnight) stain the wood with this mixture if you want a grey finish. IF YOu want more brown tones stain the piece with black tea (yes the kind you drink) first thn the steel wool mix
