Use a plastic liner to keep the soil and moisture from touching the inner walls of your painted pot.
It is difficult. There are paints at Home Depot which are better. However, if they are out in the elements year round they are going to peal after a while.

Hi Marcella, hope this helps you out. Acrylic paint is the best for clay pots, prime the pots first, then use a clear acrylic sealer or spray on a matte sealer like rustoleum
Prime, paint with acrylic paint, and seal it. Krylon makes an excellent clear sealer.
Cover with several coats of poly spray or the new flexseal comes in clear.
