Add some white and a pop of your favorite color in a few accent pieces, like storage boxes, pillows, art mats etc. If you don't have natural light, I would add a quality faux plant.

I would paint bookcases white or a bright color. Add small lamp to bookcase and style it with a color to brighten the room such as an orange vase or other object. Look for artwork that complements the look you want. Plants make a big difference also. Painting one wall with a large horizontal stripe would work with the gray you have. Good luck!

if you don't want to much of an investment you could try painting shelves a nice white color. I have a very dark little kitchen in apartment with those awful dark cabinets. contact paper isn't what it used to be and I added black&white checks to mine. the best I could find was on amazon.

If the items you use on the shelves are neutral you can line the inside of the bookcase with a fun wall or contact paper.

Better, thru away. Just leave some books tight to the wall

Grey is considered a neutral color, so add colors via the bookcase, faux painting to a focal wall, bold wallpaper for focal wall, accent rug, accessories, paintings. I would recommend that you paint the ceiling "decorator white" if you haven't, for it will give height to the room and your lighting will illuminate better, and add some big crown molding as well.

I'd paint the back wall of the book case a light bright fun color so the brown is still on the outside, but the large peice doesnt' take up as much room visually.

Do the bookcase in your favorite color or wallpaper the back wall and paint the front and sides for an even bigger pop of color

Yellow and gray is really "in" right now and of course it's a bright happy color. Don't go too loud but do go saturated.

I would paint the space a light bright colour as well and/or you could get some light board the size of the back space and put wallpaper or something on it and hang it. Then if you get sick of that decoration you can take it out and redo it. Definitely change the colour of the whole area first though. Good luck

A zingy citrus colour would be great: Lime green, zesty yellow maybe. Alternatively I would paint white and line the backs with a jazzy paper

the bookcase doesn't look like great condition wood so I would go with a bright color paint and tie it in with assessories in bright colors. think of a rainbow! Add shelves of each color in the rainbow!

I probably am a considered a boring, play it safe kind of girl in some of the more creative, fun, and more colorful people's eyes, but I do love white to lighten and brighten, I do love colors. ALL pretty colors. but I do tend to keep my walls neutral, and the larger pieces of furniture white if they need to be painted, or a soft neutral because it is a lot of work and then I love adding pops of color in my decor or smaller furniture pieces of furniture. I do think if you go with your favorite color for that room and add in coordinating colors it will look great! =)

Keeping in mind that you are in a basement I would go with white. I am not a fan of bookcases as they take up floor space as well as vertical space. I would suggest a horizontal shelving unit in white to be wall mounted above the desk. Accessorize it with colorful office storage files to contain your supplies and papers. An office can tend to be cluttered so being able to store things in an organized fashion is much less stressful. And good lighting is very important.
